Pets and Friends Wollaton, Nottingham
Decent product range including very good selection of premium dog foods. Open 7 days a week with long opening hours. Self dog wash handy though expensive. Some mixed reviews regarding in house grooming.
In this review I will be looking at one of the pet shops that we have in Nottingham, namely Pets and Friends Wollaton. For those not familiar with this store it’s part of the Kennelgate group. I couldn’t help but notice that the sort of items and brands they stock are almost identical to what you would find in a Kennelgate branch.
Pets and Friends – Product Range
The interior of this store is not as large as a typical branch of Pets at Home but it seems large enough to stock a very good variety of products. Just like Kennelgate stores you get the sense that they stock some quality products and brands. I suppose the best analogy I can come up with is that Pets and Friends (and Kennelgate) are the pet equivalent of Waitrose in the supermarket world. Pets at Home on the other hand would be more like a Tesco or Morrisons of the pet world.
Knowing a little about different kibble brands I was pleased to see that they stock the premium Orijen brand. Not only that but they seemed to have more varieties of it than I have ever seen in a retail pet shop before. That’s not to say that they don’t also stock the cheap and cheerful brands but there are certainly a good number of premium brands in store. Like most pet shops they also stock a small selection of raw food but it tends to be the brands with the fancy packaging with can be very expensive. Often if you are a fan of raw feeding your dog it’s better to go to a raw feeding specialist for the best range and prices.
The sense that Pets and Friends like to stock premium brands extends to the toys section and the leads and harnesses.
Pets and Friends – Services
Within the store you will also find a self service dog wash and a groomers. There is no in-store vet which you will often find in Pets at Home which has more floor space. The self service dog wash is a great idea, though slightly expensive. It costs £7.50 but they do provide different shampoo options, towels and a powerful dryer. These self service dog wash machines make it easy for your dog to get in and out and are at the perfect height for us humans, unlike washing a dog at home in the bath (bad back anyone?).
The groomers looks very professional. Free booklets detailing the services and prices look are printed on very high quality materials. The impression of the grooming service is high end though looking at reviews they seem very mixed. Finding a groomer with the right training and experience can take time. Different breeds have different requirements when it comes to grooming. Professional looking literature and an expensive grooming parlour is not always a guarantee of quality. Appearances can be deceptive and having never used the grooming service myself I would do your own research.
