Recently I have been seeing a lot of articles about Britain’s dogs suffering from boredom and depression because owners have cut back on walks because of the grim wet weather we have been having of late. This is causing a lot of depressed and unsettled dogs showing behavioural problems.
As dog owners we have the obligation to ensure our dogs exercise needs are met. This doesn’t mean just a quick outing to let your dog relieve itself but your dog should have regular walks long enough to give them the health benefits from exercise they need. A long walk will usually make your dog much more relaxed and calm. They will probably also want to have a nap. If you are going out for a few hours I always suggest that you give your dog a dog walk so that they will be ready for a snooze when you have to go out. The amount of exercise your dog needs will depends of their breed, age and any health problems they may have. If the weather is just to bad and you can’t go out there are other things you can do. One thing is to play brain games with your dog or just to play some fun games indoors. Brain games are a great way to challenge your dog mentally and tire them out.
We all have busy lives but having a pet is a big responsibility and we shouldn’t make that sort of commitment if we are unable to provide them with the attention, love and commitment they deserve. If you have a very life and work long hours getting a dog walker or pet sitter to help out is the best solution.
